NCDC Approves ₦100,000 Weekly Isolation Allowance, Tracks 53 Contacts After Index Ebola Case Detected
By Oriental Africa News Room
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has officially approved a ₦100,000 weekly emergency allowance for individuals placed under strict isolation to prevent the spread of Ebola. Health authorities confirmed that 53 primary contacts have been successfully traced and put under a 21-day medical surveillance window. The sweeping emergency measures follow the detection of Nigeria's index case—a 42-year-old female traveler who returned from Uganda.
The index patient arrived from Uganda via Addis Ababa and developed symptoms including fever, sore throat, and body aches, testing positive for the Bundibugyo Ebola strain. Her condition has improved remarkably under isolation. Out of the 53 primary contacts, 44 are healthcare workers from the private facility where she was first treated, while the remaining 9 include her husband, domestic staff, and individuals at an office she visited. To ensure strict compliance with isolation, the federal government is fully covering feeding and accommodation costs, alongside the ₦100,000 weekly financial support package. Crucially, the NCDC confirmed that two separate suspected cases in Rivers State and the FCT have both tested negative, and no secondary transmission has been recorded inside Nigeria.
The NCDC has fully activated its National Incident Management System at the highest level. Between 9 and 12 public and private laboratories have been fully equipped across Nigeria to handle localized testing. Meanwhile, states like Lagos have aggressively stepped up border entry screenings—particularly at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport—to flag inbound travelers showing high temperatures.
