The Truth Behind the Drama: Tansian University Exposes Real Reason Behind Senator Umeh’s Allegations
ABUJA — The management of Tansian University, located in Umunya, Anambra State, has formally pushed back against accusations raised against it on the floor of the Senate by Senator Victor Umeh, declaring the lawmaker's statements entirely inaccurate and defamatory.
Through its legal representative, E. I. Chukwuka, Esq., the university dispatched an official rebuttal dated October 23, 2026, to the Clerk of the Senate. The correspondence directly addresses a presentation made by Senator Umeh on October 22, 2026, in which he claimed that a "Managing Director" was unilaterally hiring and firing Vice Chancellors at the institution amid various administrative failures.
Clarifying the Governance Hierarchy
In its response, Tansian University explicitly stated that the position of a "Managing Director" does not exist within its structural framework, adding that no regulatory breaches have occurred to justify any legislative probe.
To clear up the misconceptions surrounding its recent leadership changes, the university provided a clear timeline of its executive administration:
  • Prof. Eugene O. Nwadialor: Served continuously as the sole Vice Chancellor from May 2019 until his retirement on September 30, 2026, at the age of 85. Though his standard five-year contract expired in May 2024, his tenure was prolonged by 30 months via approval from the Board of Trustees and Governing Council. Ironically, the university highlighted that Senator Umeh himself was the Chancellor and Board Chairman when this extension was authorized.
  • Prof. Nnamdi Dike Umeoduagu: Briefly stepped into the role of Acting Vice Chancellor in August 2026 but unfortunately passed away under unverified circumstances on October 3, 2026.
  • Rev. Fr. Prof. Nnamdi Ambrose Nwankwo: Officially appointed as the new, substantive Vice Chancellor on October 5, 2026, by the relevant governing bodies.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings (Sub Judice)
Regarding the regulatory matters brought up by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the university emphasized that these issues are already being litigated in court.
The matter is filed under Suit No: FHC/AWK/CS/276/2026 (Tansian University & Ors. v. National Universities Commission & Attorney General of the Federation). Because the Attorney General is a party representing federal organs—including the National Assembly and the Senate—the university argued that Senator Umeh's public commentary violates the sub judice rule and constitutes a prejudicial interference with ongoing judicial processes.
Allegations of Personal Grievance
The university went on to suggest that the lawmaker's public statements stem from personal resentment over his ouster from the institution's top leadership. Senator Umeh was relieved of his duties as Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Trustees after the previous board was dissolved to align with NUC directives.
According to the legal filing, the lawmaker was profoundly displeased with his removal and is allegedly leveraging his political platform to diminish the university's reputation. Tansian University has called upon the Senate leadership to disregard the assertions and allow the federal court to determine the outcome of the dispute.

Editorial Comment
The escalation of the dispute between Senator Victor Umeh and the leadership of Tansian University underscores the delicate intersection of legislative oversight, institutional autonomy, and personal accountability in Nigeria's higher education sector. While lawmakers have a constitutional mandate to address regulatory lapses, public broadsides on issues already pending before a federal court risk undermining the integrity of the judiciary under the sub judice doctrine. For a private university, operational stability and structural clarity are critical components of public trust; hence, the legal resolution of Suit No: FHC/AWK/CS/276/2026 will be pivotal in establishing whether the institution's current governance structures align fully with National Universities Commission (NUC) standards.
