The fragile unity within Nigeria’s organized labour has completely fractured into a highly publicized civil war, sending shockwaves through the nation’s political landscape. Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero launched a scathing attack on Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo, boldly declaring, "You can't lead the TUC from abroad."
The public insult was thrown during intense debates regarding the implementation of the ₦70,000 transport allowance framework for Nigerian workers. Osifo did not take the insult lying down, immediately clapping back by stating that Ajaero fundamentally "does not understand Labour negotiations" and is running a solo media campaign instead of focusing on collective bargaining.
With everyday workers still feeling the pinch of economic reforms, the sight of the country's two most powerful labour generals fighting in public has triggered massive outrage and a wave of sarcastic memes across Nigerian Twitter (X) and Facebook. Many citizens are expressing deep frustration that internal politics are taking precedence over the welfare of the masses, making this a rapidly growing talking point online.
