FG Approves ₦70,000 Monthly Transport Allowance for Public Sector Workers

By Oriental Africa News Room
ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Federal Government has officially approved a temporary ₦70,000 monthly transport support allowance for public service workers. This new financial intervention will span a six-month period, beginning in November 2026.
The decision follows high-stakes conciliation meetings between federal officials and organized labor leaders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The allowance is designed as an emergency cushion to ease the severe commuting costs faced by civil servants due to recent fuel price adjustments and macroeconomic reforms.
Labor representatives have expressed cautious optimism about the timeline, while urging the government to pursue permanent structural reliefs for the Nigerian workforce.

Editorial Column
The Federal Government’s approval of a temporary ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance represents a crucial, timely intervention that acknowledges the severe financial strain current inflationary pressures place on Nigerian public servants. However, because this financial relief is strictly capped at a six-month duration, it must be viewed by organized labor and civil service stakeholders as an emergency cushion rather than a permanent structural cure. To prevent a return to severe economic hardship once the program expires, the government must use this six-month window to implement lasting macroeconomic remedies, coordinate rollout strategies across state and local levels, and finalize comprehensive national minimum wage structures.
